COVID-19 - VDS Policy Questions Answered: a letter to VDS members

Dear Member,

Since my last letter, the advice from the government imposing strict social distancing measures to curb the spread of COVID-19 has led to changes in lifestyle and working arrangements for all veterinary professionals and your teams. At the VDS, we want to reassure you that we are here to protect and support you in the essential work you are doing to maintain the food chain and provide emergency veterinary services. We understand the pressures you are facing in balancing caring for your teams with being public health ambassadors in your communities and providing vital services to maintain animal health and welfare.

The changes in working patterns have led to some members enquiring about how their VDS Professional Indemnity Policy operates under these new circumstances. For this reason, we wanted to point you in the direction of resources which can help you navigate decisions you are making for yourself and your practice at this unusual time.

If you fall into the group defined by the government as being at increased risk of severe illness from coronavirus (pregnant, over 70s or specific underlying health condition) and therefore find yourself unable to work due to having to follow stringent self-distancing measures, please call us for specific advice. Otherwise, the first place to look is within the Resources section of our website where you will find the following Advice notes (VDS Member login required):

In Resources, you will also find other Advice Notes which may be useful at this time covering areas such as Locums, Animal Welfare, clinical and client records and handling complaints. In order to access the Advice notes you will need to log into our website. If you are unsure how to do this or if you would like to discuss your specific circumstances, please call us on +44 (0) 1565 652737 or email us.

These are difficult times for us all and we would like to pay tribute to those of you on the frontline, attending to animal welfare emergencies and ensuring the UK and Ireland has a steady supply of food in the most difficult of circumstances. Be assured, as the VDS has done for the last 155 years, we will continue to support and protect you in the difficult times ahead.
