The VDS Practice policy provides professional indemnity insurance for civil claims (a claim for financial compensation arising from an allegation of veterinary negligence) and criminal and disciplinary claims (relating to professional misconduct e.g. RCVS/VDS complaint) that may arise out of Normal Veterinary Work. If you are an RVN and plan to undertake work with animals independently, without being under the direction of a veterinary surgeon (e.g. pet boarding, dog walking), you may wish to consider the following: If you are in any doubt, we suggest that you seek advice from the RCVS/VCI directly. The VDS Policy for Representation Costs in Criminal and Disciplinary Proceedings for Individual Registered Veterinary Nurses is designed for RVNs doing work which is required by the relevant Code of Conduct to be covered by Professional Indemnity Insurance. You may also wish to seek independent legal advice on which other types of insurance may be required or recommended for your planned work e.g. Public Liability, Care, Custody and Control Insurance or Employer's Liability Insurance. For more information on insurance options for RVNs who provide veterinary nursing services to practices or businesses as a subcontractor (locum), please read the Advice Note 'Registered Veterinary Nurse (RVN) Locums: Providing your services to Practices and other Veterinary Businesses'. If you will remain named on another practice policy, you will already benefit from indemnity for criminal and disciplinary representation costs should an allegation of misconduct arise (e.g. RCVS/VCI complaint) from any of your veterinary nursing work. This cover is portable, but the policyholder may be made aware of any claims that fall against their policy. Alternatively, you can apply for your own individual VDS RVN Policy for Representation Costs in Criminal and Disciplinary Proceedings. If you have any questions, please give our Membership team a call on +44 (0)1565 652737.
