Supporting Our Veterinary Community - A Longstanding Community

The VDS has a proud and enduring history of benevolence, dating back to the formation of the Veterinary Mutual Defence Society in 1865. From its earliest days, the VDS recognised the importance of supporting veterinary professionals not only through insurance but also through benevolent assistance.

In 1978, these two crucial functions were formally separated into distinct organisations: the VDS and the Veterinary Benevolent Fund, now known as Vetlife. Despite this structural change, the close relationship between these organisations has remained strong, with VDS members being encouraged to make voluntary donations to either Vetlife or the Irish Veterinary Benevolent Fund (IVBF).

Ongoing Commitment to Giving

In 2024, the VDS demonstrated its continued support and along with your donations from the AGM and Renewals process, we’re delighted to announce that the VDS donated £156,000 to Vetlife and €23,000 to the IVBF. This financial contribution helps sustain the essential work of these organisations, ensuring that veterinary professionals facing hardship receive the assistance they need.

Why Our Support Matters

The work of Vetlife and the IVBF is absolutely vital to the well-being of the veterinary community. They offer:

  • Financial assistance for those in need
  • Emotional support during challenging times
  • Help with work-related stress and addiction issues

The VDS is immensely proud to support these organisations and their mission to care for veterinary professionals when they need it most.

To contact Vetlife please call the Vetlife Helpline on 0303 040 2551 or send an anonymous email via Helpline.vetlife.org.uk. The IVBF ask that you call 1800 145 145 and you will be automatically directed through to Vetlife.
